Jumping out of a plane – Skydiving in Mexico City

Skydiving was on my bucket list since forever. I have to say I am very afraid of heights and still I always wanted to do it. If you also want to do it during your time in Mexico City here is how to!

How it works

I went with Skydive México.  I got picked up at 8am at the collection point South of Mexico City next to a highway. I took an uber to get there however depending from where you come you can also get there by public transport. The ride was about 2.5 hours since there was a lot of traffic.

Up on arrival the drive tells you the time you have to be back at the car. The skydiving team knows you are with a group so they make sure you are done by then. Just make sure you keep the time in mind so that they don’t have to wait for you or worse case leave without you.

Together with your group you move to the register. When I was there it was a big hectic a lot of groups and families where about to do the skydive but it was very well organised. You get a two page document to fill in your data, choose the package you would like and sign a disclaimer. They also ask you if you have a health insurance. The whole document is in Spanish but the staff and other customers were super helpful.

After you hand it your documents and ID it is time to wait. You can use the bathroom, get some water and walk around the location a bit. You can watch the planes starting and people landing from their skydive which is super cool to see! Make sure to not go too far since they will call your name once it is time. Then it is time to meet your skydive buddy, put on the gear and get an introduction and how to jump. If you don’t speak Spanish they can give you the introduction in English. My buddy was called Marco and he was the best!

The Jump

Now the exciting part starts! Getting on the plane. Marco made sure that we got on the plane the last so I could sit next to the open door which was an amazing experience! To be honest the plane experience was almost as cool as the free fall! Once you reach the designated height you get asked to switch to your knees and then sit legs down at the open door. At this point I got scared to fall which is ridiculous because we were just about to jump.

Finally the jump. The wind is strong and flings you through the air. 30 seconds of free fall. Then the parachute opens and you really sail through the air. It gave me the same feeling as I was on a boot which unfortunately made me sea ehm air sick a bit. Marco explained some of the sourridings and let me steer the parachute for a while. If you do not get sick as I did you can enjoy the beautiful landscape and the incredible feeling of flying. Now I also understand why it is called skydiving if really feels like you are diving in the sky! After about 10 minutes its time to land which depending on the situation will be running on your feet or on your butt.

A last “I did it! I went skydiving” picture and then its time to get rid of your gear again and wait for the footage. There is a photographer on the floor you takes pictures of you in the landing approach which you can buy for an additional charge of 10€.

Since my circulation was a bit off I bought a coke and sat down for a while reflecting on the incredible experience I just had. Later on I got some fries and sat together with some other people of my group who have also just finished.

What to bring

Your official identification document and the credit card you have made the payment with. You can also choose to pay in cash upon arrival which sometimes gives you a discount. Bring cash either way since you will have some waiting time before and after your skydiving experience so you can buy drinks and food.

Comfortable clothes, closed shoes and a hoodie since it gets quite chilly high up in the air.

If your phone does not have a lot of storage capacity bring a USB stick for the footage.

How to get there

The skydive is located in Tequesquitengo about 85km South of Mexico City. You have four options to get there, however I strongly only recommend you the first one.

  1. The Skydive has a transport service running on Saturdays and Sundays where they pick you up at a collecting point in Mexico City and return you afterwards. It is stress free, cheap and if you are travelling alone you get to meet some people on the ride.
  2. Hire a cab driver for the day. I would only do this if you are a group of 4 people, cause otherwise it is too expensive.
  3. Drive by yourself. If you know a Mexican who owns a car and wants to drive there good for you! Otherwise I strongly recommend you not to drive by yourself since the traffic in Mexico City is horrifying.
  4. Public transport. The cheapest but also longest and most inconvenient way. You need to take the metro to Taxquena first, then catch a bus heading in the direction of Jojutla o Zacatepec and ask the driver to leave you off at the Xoxocotla crossing and then catch a cab to get you to the skydive. Again, I would not choose this way since public cabs are also not the savest in Mexico City and the travel takes you almost half a day.

What it costs

This depends on the package you take and which extras you would like to book.

The height

You can choose between 13, 15 and 17 thousand foot which equals more or less 3.9km, 4.5km and 5.1km. For 13 thousand you get about 30 seconds of free fall and for the other two about 45 seconds.

  • 13.000 foot – 1950 pesos (104€)
  • 15.000 foot – 2370 pesos (126€)
  • 17.000 foot – 2890 pesos (154€)

The transport

If you choose to get their transport from Mexico City to the skydive and return (which in my opinion is absolutely worth it) you pay an extra 490 pesos (26€).

The photo and video options

  • Manual Photo or video package – 950 pesos (51€)
  • Manual Photo and video package – 1200 pesos (64€)
  • External camera package – 1650 pesos (88€)
  • Premium package – 1890 pesos (100€)
I went with 13.000 foot, the transport and the manual photo and video package so I ended up paying about 200€. You should definitely book some content option to have a memory of your probably once in a life time skydiving experience. I love the video and the pictures and think that the manual package is enough.

What do keep in mind

If your weight is more than 90kg you need to pay and additional fee. With more than 110kg skydiving is not possible. Kids can also do the skydive as long as they are minimum 7 years old and weigh 25kg. You cannot go if you have the flu, heart problems, epilepsy, fractures or recent surgeries and if you are pregnant.

Once you have booked the skydive you cannot cancel it. But until 48 hours in advance you can move it to another date.
