Why Mexico City is actually vegan food heaven

A guide to 12 vegetarian (and vegan) food spots in Mexico City

I don’t know about you but when I told my friends and family that I will be moving to Mexico City for six months one of the first things they told me was: But what are you going to eat? I am vegetarian due to a number of reasons and I am trying to go live a fully vegan lifestyle. Yes Mexico is a meat country, but that doesn’t mean you can only eat salad and plain tortillas when you are plant-based. Below you can find my guide for the 12 best vegetarian (and vegan) food spots in Mexico City which will send you straight to food heaven.

Groovys Taqueria Vegana

My ultimate top one when it comes to vegan tacos is Taqueria Grooveys in Condesa. I took my meat eating friends here and they absolutely loved it as well. The corn tortillas are handmade and everything is always super fresh. Their meat (and fish) substitutes are based on soy, seitan or mushrooms and cost 25 Pesos per piece.

Ramen Bar

If you feel like Japanese food I highly recommend you checking out Ramen Bar in Roma Norte. They have a classic and a vegan menu. I had dumplings and an udon with vegetables and tofu and it was delicious. They also sell amazing kombucha.

Casa de Tono

The absolute opposite of a vegan restaurant, because most of what they sell is meat, meat and more meat. However they still have vegetarian quesadillas with cheese, potato, pumpkin flower or mushrooms and a vegetarian pozole. Pozole is a very typical Mexican dish, similar to soup topped with salad, cream and vegetables. It is a very famous spot for Mexican families or groups of friends because they are insanely fast and cheap.

Los Veganos de Canasta

Food truck located in Roma Sur next to other food trucks selling vegan food or sustainable bath and home products, this place is very cheap and never crowed. They sell tacos and fajitas and both were delicious!

Gracias Madre

I have not eaten in there, only ordered a delivery for home, but the place looks super cute and offers a big variety of tacos and burritos.

Forever Vegano

I found this cute place while looking for a place to work from and was positively surprised. For coffee they have a broad variaty of milk alternatives to choose from on for lunch I got a vegan version of the american dish “Chicken & Waffles” with maple syrup. It was spicy and very tasty.

Gold Taco

Located in Mercado Roma, Gold Taco is a small stand with three chairs to sit at the counter. After Groovys the best vegan tacos I had in Mexico City. The great thing is that Mercado Roma is a lot of different food spots to offer so you can go with your friends and all get food from a different restaurant and still eat all together in the main area.

Gatorta

THE place in Mexico to get a vegan Torta. One street food truck in Juaraz close to Glorieta de Los Insurgentes, not offering delivery or a place to sit, but by far the best tortas I have had. You can choose between milanesa, pastor, chorizo, suadero, salchicha and soyita pibil (all vegan of course) or get a combination of all.

Pitahaya vegana

In my opinion a bit overrated and overpriced. However, I think it was still super cool to get pink tacos!

Fat Vegan

Craving a burger, fries and milkshake? Then Fat Vegan got your back! Located in Roma Sur, Fat Vegan is a tiny restaurant offering take away, delivery or simply eating there in case you find a spot. My personal recommendation is the Fat & Happy burger and the Salty Vegan Milkshake. The later comes with Vanilla, Peanut Butter, Pretzel, and Banana. I mean?!

Por Siempre Vegana

One of the most famous spots in Mexico City to get vegan tacos. They have a street food truck and a restaurant, however I have only checked on the truck. When you go during rush hour (evenings and weekends) expect to wait up to an hour. The tacos are cheap and delicious. Apart from that they also sell tortas (sandwiches).

Tamales Dona Emi

You cannot leave Mexico without trying tamalas. A traditional central american dish made from corn dough and either filled sweet or savory. The sweet ones are all vegetarian (maybe even vegan but here I am not sure so you should always ask). And for the savory ones you can choose from a big selection of pepper, mushrooms and cheese.
